What is 316L grade stainless steel?
Stainless steel types 1.4401 and 1.4404 are also known as grades 316 and 316L respectively. Grade 316 is an austenitic grade second only to 304 in commercial importance. 316 stainless steel contains an addition of molybdenum that gives it improved corrosion resistance.
What is 316 stainless steel sheet?
316 Stainless Steel Alloy is a standard molybdenum-bearing grade, the second most commonly sought after grade next to grade 304 amongst the austenitic stainless steels. The molybdenum gives 316 better overall corrosion resistant properties than Grade 304, particularly higher resistance in chloride environments.
How strong is stainless steel plate?
Grade 316 stainless steel plate has a minimum tensile strength of 75 ksi and a yield strength at 0.2% of 30 ksi. 316 stainless steel plate has a 40% elongation. On the Brinell hardness scale 316 stainless steel plate has a hardness of 217 and a Rockwell B hardness of 95.
Stainless steel plate is often referred to as 'corrosion-resistant steel' - it does not stain, corrode or rust as easily as normal carbon steel. It would however be misleading to say it is corrosion-proof. It differs significantly from standard carbon steel due to the amount of chromium present, which limits surface corrosion unlike carbon steel which will rust when exposed to air and any moisture in the atmosphere. Due to its anti-oxidation qualities, stainless steel is often a popular solution.
